You are driving down the highway, or maybe a remote country road, and your car breaks down.  What are you supposed to do?  While you had to learn the rules of the road and how to drive in order to get your license, chances are you didn’t learn what to do when your car breaks down.  Knowing what to do can keep you safe and get your car back to normal operating status quicker.

Here are is a quick guide on what to do when your car breaks down, from car repair, to towing, to safety advice and more.

Move to a Safe Place

The first thing that you should do when your car breaks down is move it to a safe location if possible.  Car repair can’t be performed if you’re at risk of getting hit by another vehicle.  The safest place you can move it to is a parking lot, but chances are this won’t be an option.  If you can’t turn into a parking lot or driveway, try to move the car as far off the road as possible.

Do not get out of your car if you are broken down on the highway and are not able to get to the shoulder. When you do get out of your car, be extremely careful.

Know Your Abilities

It is important to know when you can perform the needed car repair yourself and when you will need to call a tow truck.  You may also need to visit a mechanic for your car repair.  However, if you just have a flat tire, you might be able to do that type of car repair yourself.  Depending on how comfortable you are with cars, you might be able to do other small repairs yourself.

You should never do a car repair yourself when it is unsafe to do so.  Tow trucks can repair flat tires on the scene and have the safety gear to protect themselves.

Call a Tow Truck

As soon as you have ascertained that your car will not start working again, call a tow truck.  It may take a while for the tow truck to get there, so if you think there’s a small chance that you will be able to do a car repair yourself, you can still call. If you fix it before they arrive, you can call the tow company back and tell them that your car repair worked and the vehicle is running again.

It’s helpful to keep handy the phone numbers of a few tow companies and car repair shops in your area.  That way, if you break down, you already know who to call.

Use a Call for Help Phone

If your phone isn’t working, some states have call for help phones on the highways.  This is especially true for highways that don’t get good cell phone reception.  Look for one of these if you need help.  Typically, call for help phones are in red or blue boxes, with 9-1-1 or “emergency” written on them.

Having your car break down is never fun, but if you have a plan and know what to do, it can be a lot easier to deal with.  Take these tips to heart and be ready for when your car breaks down. Whether you can do a DIY car repair or have to tow your vehicle to a nearby car repair shop, you’ll have your vehicle taken care of.
